The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the setting star, 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 and taught to him 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
