The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
