The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 created Man of a blood-clot. 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, but verily man is rebellious 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 truly, all will return to your Lord. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 Hast thou considered whether he is on the right way, 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 By no means! If he desist not We shall seize and deal him by the forelock 15 A forelock, lying, sinning. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! 18 (Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God. ۩ 19
