Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
