A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
