And to Thamood their brother Salih; he said, 'O my people, serve God! You have no god other than He; there has now come to you a clear sign from your Lord -- this is the She-camel of God, to be a sign for you. Leave her that she may eat in God's earth, and do not touch her with evil, lest you be seized by a painful chastisement. 73 Remember, how you were made leaders after the people of 'Ad, and were settled on the land so that you could construct on the plains palaces, and carve dwellings out of mountains. So think of the favours of God, and do not act with corruption in the land." 74 The leaders of the arrogant party among his people said to those who were reckoned powerless - those among them who believed: "know ye indeed that Salih is a messenger from his Lord?" They said: "We do indeed believe in the revelation which hath been sent through him." 75 [But] the arrogant ones said: "Behold, what you have come to believe in we refuse to regard as true!" 76 So they hamstrung the She-camel and turned in disdain from the commandment of their Lord, saying, 'O Salih, bring us that thou promisest us, if thou art an Envoy.' 77 So the earthquake took them unawares, and they lay prostrate in their homes in the morning! 78 So Salih left them, saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the message for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but ye love not good counsellors!" 79 We sent Lot, who said to his people, "How can you commit an abomination such as no one in the world has ever done before you? 80 Verily, with lust you approach men instead of women: nay, but you are people given to excesses!" 81 The only answer given by his people was, "Turn them out of your town. They are people who regard themselves to be pure." 82 So We saved him and his family -- except for his wife. She was one of those who stayed behind. 83 and We rained down upon them a rain. So look how was the end of the evildoers. 84
