Said the Council of the people of Pharaoh, 'Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer 109 and said, "He wants to expel you from your land." They asked (others), " what is your opinion in the matter? 110 They said, "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send into the cities summoners, 111 to summon every skilful magician to your presence.' 112 And the enchanters came to Firon (and) said: We must surely have a reward if we are the prevailing ones. 113 He said: Yes, and you shall certainly be of those who are near (to me). 114 They said: "O Moses! Either thou shalt throw [thy staff first,] or we shall [be the first to] throw." 115 He said, 'You cast.' And when they cast they put a Spell upon the people's eyes, and called forth fear of them, and produced a mighty sorcery. 116 Then We revealed to Moses: 'Now, throw down your staff' And thereupon it swallowed up their false invention. 117 ۞ Thus was the truth established, and their doings proved in vain. 118 So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. 119 And the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves. 120 [and] exclaiming: "We have come to believe in the Sustainer of all the worlds, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Said Pharaoh: "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? Surely this is a trick which ye have planned in the city to drive out its people: but soon shall ye know (the consequences). 123 I will certainly cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then will I crucify you all together. 124 They said: verily unto our Lord we are turning. 125 Thou takest vengeance upon us only because we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour out upon us patience, and gather us unto Thee surrendering.' 126
