The chiefs of the people of Fir'awn said: verily this is a magician knowing. 109 who seeks to drive you from your land!" Pharaoh said, "What then do you advise?" 110 They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers 111 who shall bring before thee every sorcerer of great knowledge." 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant." 113 He said, “Yes, and you will then become close to me.” 114 They said: O Moses! Either throw (first) or let us be the first throwers? 115 He said, "You throw [first]!" When they made their cast, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck them with awe, for they showed a great [feat of] magic. 116 And We revealed to Moses: 'Cast thy staff!' And lo, it forthwith swallowed up their lying invention. 117 ۞ So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing. 118 they were defeated and turned belittled, 119 and the magicians flung themselves prostrate, 120 saying, "We declare our belief in the Lord of the Universe, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron' 122 Said Pharaoh: "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? Surely this is a trick which ye have planned in the city to drive out its people: but soon shall ye know (the consequences). 123 Surely I shall have your hands and feet cut off upon alternate sides. Then I shall crucify you every one. 124 They answered: "We have (in any case) to go back to our Lord. 125 "And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims." 126
