The great ones among Pharaoh's people said: "Verily, this is indeed a sorcerer of great knowledge, 109 "His plan is to get you out of your land: then what is it ye counsel?" 110 They said: "Put him and his brother off (awhile) and send out heralds to the cities 111 "To bring all the wise magicians to you." 112 The magicians came to the Pharaoh and said: "Is there reward for us if we succeed?" 113 The Pharaoh replied, "In addition to your rewards, you will become my close friends thereafter." 114 They said, "Moses, will you first throw, or shall we?" 115 "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm. 116 We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time. 117 ۞ So the truth was established, and what they did became null. 118 Thus they were vanquished there, and they went back abased. 119 and the sorcerers prostrated themselves, 120 They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds, 121 The Lord of Musa and Harun. 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 Surely I will cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides and thereafter I will crucify you all. 124 They said, 'Surely unto our Lord we are turning. 125 Will you punish us just because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us? Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance and cause us to die as those who have submitted [to You].' 126
