The chiefs of the people of Fir'awn said: verily this is a magician knowing. 109 who seeks to drive you from your land!" Pharaoh said, "What then do you advise?" 110 They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect- 111 "To bring all the wise magicians to you." 112 And so the sorcerers came to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). They said: "Indeed there will be a (good) reward for us if we are the victors." 113 Pharaoh replied, "Certainly, and you shall also become my courtiers." 114 So they said: "O Moses, you may cast your spell first, or we shall cast ours." 115 He answered: "You throw [first]." And when they threw down [their staffs,] they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and struck them with awe, and produced mighty sorcery. 116 We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time. 117 ۞ Thus the truth was upheld, and the falsehood that they practised was exposed. 118 The magicians who were defeated on the spot and were proved to be worthless, 119 and the sorcerers prostrated themselves, 120 saying, "We declare our belief in the Lord of the Universe, 121 The Lord of Moses and Aaron. 122 Pharaoh said: Ye believe in Him before I give you leave! Lo! this is the plot that ye have plotted in the city that ye may drive its people hence. But ye shall come to know! 123 "I will have your hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, and have you all crucified." 124 They said: "For us, We are but sent back unto our Lord: 125 "But thou dost wreak thy vengeance on us simply because we believed in the Signs of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy, and take our souls unto thee as Muslims (who bow to thy will)! 126
