We punished the people of Pharaoh with years (of droughts) and shortness of crops; that they might receive admonition. 130 So, when good came to them, they said, 'This belongs to us'; but if any evil smote them, they would augur ill by Moses and those with him. Why, surely their ill augury was with God; but the most of them knew not. 131 They said, "Whatever miracles you work to bewitch us, we will not believe in you." 132 Then We afflicted them with a great flood and locusts, and the lice, and the frogs, and the blood. All these were distinct signs and yet they remained haughty. They were a wicked people. 133 And when the wrath fell upon them, they said, 'Moses, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee. If thou removest from us the wrath, surely we will believe thee, and send forth with thee the Children of Israel.' 134 But when We removed the scourge from them until a term - a term which they were bound to reach - they at once broke their promise. 135 Wherefore We took vengeance on them and drowned them in the sea, for they belied Our signs and were neglectful of them. 136 And We made the people who were deemed weak to inherit the eastern lands and the western ones which We had blessed; and the good word of your Lord was fulfilled in the children of Israel because they bore up (sufferings) patiently; and We utterly destroyed what Firon and his people had wrought and what they built. 137 And We led the Children of Isra'il across the sea. Then they came upon a people cleaving to the idols they had. They said: Musa! make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: verily ye are a people given to ignorance. 138 “The condition they are in is, in fact, one of destruction – and all what they do is utter falsehood.” 139 Should I choose for you a lord other than God who has favored you above all other people? 140 And recall what time We delivered you from the house of Fir'awn perpetrating on you terrible torment, slaying your sons and letting your women live, and therein was a trial from your Lord, tremendous. 141
