Those who were left behind rejoiced in tarrying behind the Messenger of God, and were averse to struggle with their possessions and their selves in the way of God. They said, 'Go not forth in the heat.' Say: 'Gehenna's fire is hotter, did they but understand.' 81 Let them, then, laugh a little - for they will weep a lot in return for what they have earned. 82 If Allah bring thee back (from the campaign) unto a party of them and they ask of thee leave to go out (to fight), then say unto them: Ye shall never more go out with me nor fight with me against a foe. Ye were content with sitting still the first time. So sit still, with the useless. 83 And never (O Muhammad) pray for one of them who dieth, nor stand by his grave. Lo! they disbelieved in Allah and His messenger, and they died while they were evil-doers. 84 Let neither their riches nor their children please you. With it Allah wants to punish them in this life, so that their souls depart while they disbelieve. 85 And whenever any surah is revealed enjoining: "Believe in Allah and strive (in His Way) along with His Messenger," the affluent among them ask you to excuse them, saying: "Leave us with those who will sit back at home." 86 They were content to stay behind with the womenfolk. Their hearts were sealed, leaving them bereft of understanding. 87 But the Apostle and those who believe with him strive hard with their property and their persons; and these it is who shall have the good things and these it is who shall be successful. 88 God has prepared for them gardens underneath which rivers flow, therein to dwell forever; that is the mighty triumph. 89
