The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
99 verses, revealed in Mecca after Joseph (Yousuf) before Animals (Al-An 'aam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Ra'. These are the verses of the Book, and a Clear Qur'an. 1 Perchance the unbelievers will wish that they had surrendered: 2 Leave them to feast and revel, beguiled by hope; they will come to know soon. 3 And never did We destroy a town but it had a term made known. 4 No community precedeth the term thereof nor doth it fall behind. 5 (The unbelievers have said), "You to whom the Quran has been revealed are insane. 6 Why bringest thou not angels unto us, if thou art of the truthful? 7 We do not send angels except with the truth. Then they shall have no respite. 8 Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). 9 We sent Messengers to the ancient people who lived before you. 10 But never came a messenger to them but they mocked him. 11 Even so we make a way for it in the hearts of the culprits. 12 They will not believe in it, though they have before them the example of former peoples, 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 they would still say, "Our eyes have been dazzled. We are bewitched." 15

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
