The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ ALIF LAM RA. These are the verses of the Book and the perspicuous oration. 1 It could be that those who disbelieve will wish that they were Muslims. 2 Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know. 3 We have never destroyed a township without a definite decree having been issued; 4 No nation can outstrip its term, nor do they put it back. 5 And they say: O thou unto whom the admonition hath been sent down! verily thou art possessed. 6 Why do you not bring down angels upon us if you are indeed truthful?" 7 But then We never send the angels down save with the purpose (of enforcing their doom), after which they will not be given more respite. 8 It is We who have sent down the Reminder and We will, most surely, safeguard it. 9 AND, INDEED, [O Prophet,] even before thy time did We send [Our apostles] unto communities of old 10 And never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him. 11 Thus do We let it (polytheism and disbelief) enter into the hearts of the Mujrimun [criminals, polytheists, pagans, etc. (because of their mockery at the Messengers)]. 12 They believe not therein, and already the example of the ancients hath gone forth. 13 And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend, 14 they would surely have said, "It is only our eyes that are spellbound! Nay, we have been bewitched! 15
