۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the Book, and a Qur'an luminous. 1 It may be that those who disbelieve wish ardently that they were Muslims. 2 Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them). 3 We have never destroyed a township without a definite decree having been issued; 4 No nation can outstrip its term nor can they lag behind. 5 They say: "O you to whom the Admonition has been revealed, you are surely crazed. 6 “Why do you not bring angels to us, if you are truthful?” 7 We do not send down the angels (in frivolity); and when We do send them down, We do so with Truth; then people are granted no respite. 8 Verily We! it is We who have revealed the admonition, and verily We are the guardians thereof. 9 AND, INDEED, [O Prophet,] even before thy time did We send [Our apostles] unto communities of old 10 And never came a Messenger to them but they did mock him. 11 Thus do We let it (polytheism and disbelief) enter into the hearts of the Mujrimun [criminals, polytheists, pagans, etc. (because of their mockery at the Messengers)]. 12 They do not believe in it even though the practice of the ancients has already gone. 13 Even if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein, 14 Even then they would say, “Our sights have been hypnotised – in fact, a magic spell has been cast upon us.” 15
