The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the Book, and a Qur'an luminous. 1 Perchance the unbelievers will wish that they had surrendered: 2 Leave them thou to eat and to enjoy, and let vain hope divert them; presently they will know. 3 Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand. 4 No nation can outstrip its term nor can they lag behind. 5 (The unbelievers have said), "You to whom the Quran has been revealed are insane. 6 Why do you not bring down the angels upon us, if you are truthful?" 7 We send not the angels down except with the truth (i.e. for torment, etc.), and in that case, they (the disbelievers) would have no respite! 8 Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. 9 And certainly We sent (apostles) before you among the nations of yore. 10 But no Messenger came to them except he was mocked. 11 Even so we make a way for it in the hearts of the culprits. 12 They do not believe in it even though the practice of the ancients has already gone. 13 and even if We opened to them a door from heaven, and they began ascending through it, 14 yet would they say, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; nay, we are a people bewitched!' 15
