The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ A. L. R. These are the Ayats of Revelation,- of a Qur'an that makes things clear. 1 It may be that those who disbelieve wish ardently that they were Muslims. 2 Let them eat and enjoy; and let their hopes deceive them, soon they shall know. 3 And never did We destroy a township but there was a known decree for it. 4 No people can hasten or delay the term already fixed for them. 5 They say: "O you to whom the Admonition has been revealed, you are surely crazed. 6 Why do you not bring to us the angels if you are of the truthful ones? 7 [Yet] We never send down angels otherwise than in accordance with the [demands of] truth; and [were the angels to appear now,] lo! they [who reject this divine writ] would have no further respite! 8 We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption). 9 We had also sent apostles to people of earlier persuasions. 10 But never once an apostle came to them at whom they did not scoff. 11 This is how We make the mocking* enter the hearts of the guilty. (* The acts of disbelief.) 12 They believe not therein, though the example of the men of old hath gone before. 13 And even if We open to them a gateway of heaven, so that they ascend into it all the while, 14 they would still have said: "Surely our eyes have been dazzled; rather, we have been enchanted." 15
