The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
99 verses, revealed in Mecca after Joseph (Yousuf) before Animals (Al-An 'aam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Ra. These are verses of the Scripture and a plain Reading. 1 Oft times would those who disbelieve fain that they had been Muslims. 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy life and let false hopes amuse them. They will soon come to know. 3 And never did We destroy a town but it had a term made known. 4 No group may advance its appointed promise nor postpone it. 5 They say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)! 6 Why dost thou not bring the angels unto us, if thou speakest truly?' 7 We do not send down angels except for a genuine purpose, at which time none will be given any further respite. 8 Behold, it is We Ourselves who have bestowed from on high, step by step, this reminder; and behold, it is We who shall truly guard it [from all corruption]. 9 We verily sent (messengers) before thee among the factions of the men of old. 10 But no Messenger came to them except he was mocked. 11 This is how We make the mocking* enter the hearts of the guilty. (* The acts of disbelief.) 12 who do not believe in it, although the way which those [evildoers] of olden times had to go has long been within their ken. 13 And if We open for them a gate in the heavens, to ascend it through the day 14 they would have said, "Our eyes are bewildered and we have been affected by magic." 15
