And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnain. Say: "I shall recite to you something of his story." 83 Surely We established him in the land and granted him means of access to every thing. 84 So he followed a course. 85 until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and he found nearby a people. We said, 'O Dhool Karnain, either thou shalt chastise them, or thou shalt take towards them a way of kindness.' 86 He submitted, “Regarding one who has done injustice, we shall soon punish him – he will then be brought back to his Lord, Who will punish him severely.” 87 “And regarding one who believed and did good deeds – so his reward is goodness; and we shall soon give him an easy command.” 88 Then he followed a way 89 to the East where he found the sun rising upon a people whom We had exposed to its rays. 90 It was so, for We were fully informed about him. 91 Then he set out on another expedition 92 Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech. 93 They said: 'O Dhu'l-Qarnain, Gog and Magog are oppressing the land. May we pay you some tribute so that you could build a rampart between us and them?" 94 He said: That in which my Lord has established me is better, therefore you only help me with workers, I will make a fortified barrier between you and them; 95 bring me blocks of iron." Then, when he had filled the gap between the mountain sides [he said], "Now blow on the fire with your bellows." When the iron blocks were red with heat, he said, "Bring me molten brass to pour on them." 96 Such was the rampart that Gog and Magog could not scale, nor could they pierce it. 97 Dhu al-Qarnayn said: "This is a mercy from my Lord: but when the time of my Lord's promise shall come, He will level the rampart with the ground. My Lord's promise always comes true." 98 ۞ And We shall leave them on that day surging one against other and the trumpet shall be blown, and then We shall assemble them together. 99 And on that Day We shall place hell, for all to see, before those who denied the truth 100 Unto those whose eyes had been under a covering from My remembrance, nor had they been able to hear. 101
