(O Muhammad), they ask you about Dhu al-Qarnayn. Say: "I will give you an account of him." 83 Verily We! We established him in the earth, and vouchsafed unto him of everything a way. 84 So he followed a way 85 to the West where he found the sun setting into a warm source (spring) of water and a people living near by. We asked him, "Dhu 'l-Qarnayn, you may punish them or treat them with kindness?" 86 He replied, "I shall punish the unjust ones among them and then they will return to their Lord, who will punish them more sternly". 87 But as for him who believes and does righteous deeds - he will have the ultimate good [of the life to come] as his reward; and [as for us,] we shall make binding on him [only] that which is easy to fulfill." 88 Then he followed yet another path, 89 until he reached the limit where the sun rises and he found it rising on a people whom We had provided no shelter from it. 90 So (it was)! And We knew all about him (Dhul-Qarnain). 91 Then he followed a way 92 Until when he reached (a place) between the two mountains, he found on that side of them a people who could hardly understand a word. 93 They said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Lo! Gog and Magog are spoiling the land. So may we pay thee tribute on condition that thou set a barrier between us and them? 94 He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength; I will make between you and them a dam. 95 Give me pieces of iron - till, when he had levelled up (the gap) between the cliffs, he said: Blow! - till, when he had made it a fire, he said: Bring me molten copper to pour thereon. 96 So they were not able to scale it nor could they make a hole in it. 97 Dhu al-Qarnayn said: "This is a mercy from my Lord: but when the time of my Lord's promise shall come, He will level the rampart with the ground. My Lord's promise always comes true." 98 ۞ On that Day, We shall let them surge against each other like waves and then the Trumpet will be blown and We shall gather them all together. 99 And We shall bring hell in front of the disbelievers. 100 Unto those whose eyes had been under a covering from My remembrance, nor had they been able to hear. 101
