And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnain. Say: "I shall recite to you something of his story." 83 Surely We established him in the land and granted him means of access to every thing. 84 He set out (westwards) on an expedition, 85 until when he reached the very limits where the sun sets, he saw it setting in dark turbid waters; and nearby he met a people. We said: "O Dhu al-Qarnayn, you have the power to punish or to treat them with kindness." 86 He replied: 'The evildoer we shall punish. Then he shall return to his Lord and He will punish him with a stern punishment. 87 "But whoever believes, and works righteousness,- he shall have a goodly reward, and easy will be his task as We order it by our Command." 88 Then he followed a way 89 until he reached the rising of the sun, he found it rising upon a nation for whom We provided no veil against it to shade them. 90 thus [We had made them, and thus he left them; and We did encompass with Our knowledge all that he had in mind 91 Then followed he (another) way, 92 Till, when he came between the two mountains, he found upon their hither side a folk that scarce could understand a saying. 93 They said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Lo! Gog and Magog are spoiling the land. So may we pay thee tribute on condition that thou set a barrier between us and them? 94 He replied, "The power that my Lord has granted me is better (than your tax). Help me with your man-power and I shall construct a barrier between you and Gog and Magog. 95 Bring me lumps of iron. Then when he had evened up between the two mountain-sides, he said: blow! Then when he had made it fire, he said: bring me and I shall pour thereon molten copper. 96 Thus were they made powerless to scale it or to dig through it. 97 He said: this is a mercy from my Lord; then when the promise of my Lord cometh, He shall make it powder, and the promise of my Lord is ever true. 98 ۞ We shall leave them on that day surging like waves pressing one against the other, and the trumpet blast will be sounded, when We shall gather them all together. 99 And We will bring forth hell, exposed to view, on that day before the unbelievers. 100 Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear. 101
