Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 This is the remembrance of the mercy of your Lord upon His bondman Zakaria. 2 when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying, 3 He said: "Lord! My bones have grown feeble and my head is glistening with age; yet, never have my prayers to You, my Lord, been unfruitful. 4 Indeed, I fear my kinsmen who will succeed me, for my wife is barren. Grant me a kinsman 5 who will be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him a person who will please you". 6 (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before." 7 He said, "Lord, how can I have a son? My wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age". 8 He said: "So (it will be) thy Lord saith, 'that is easy for Me: I did indeed create thee before, when thou hadst been nothing!'" 9 He said, "My Lord, grant me a sign!" He said, "Your sign will be that you will not speak to anyone for three successive days and nights, although sound in body." 10 Thereupon he came out of the sanctuary unto his people and signified to them [by gestures]: "Extol His limitless glory by day and by night!" 11 "O John! Hold the Book with all your strength." We had bestowed wisdom upon him while he was still a child; 12 We gave him compassion and purity. He was a pious human being, 13 And kind to his parents, neither arrogant nor disobedient. 14 Peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he will die, and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
