Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 (This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah). 2 When he called to his Lord inwardly, 3 saying: 'O my Lord, my bones are enfeebled, and my head glows silver with age. Yet, never Lord, have I been unblessed in prayer to You. 4 And now I fear my kinsfolk after I am gone; and my wife is barren. So give me, from Thee, a kinsman 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 'O Zachariah, We give thee good tidings of a boy, whose name is John. No namesake have We given him aforetime.' 7 He said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?" 8 Said He, 'So it shall be; thy Lord says, "Easy is that for Me, seeing that I created thee aforetime, when thou wast nothing."' 9 He said, “My Lord, give me a sign”; He said, “Your token is that you will not speak to people for three nights, although in proper health.” 10 Then Zachariah came forth from the shrine to his people and told them by signs to glorify the Lord morning and evening. 11 'O John, take the Book forcefully'; and We gave him judgment, yet a little child, 12 We gave him compassion and purity. He was a pious human being, 13 kind to his parents, not arrogant or a rebellious person. 14 'Peace be upon him, the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised up alive!' 15
