Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 This is the remembrance of the mercy of your Lord upon His bondman Zakaria. 2 Behold! he cried to his Lord in secret, 3 saying: 'O my Lord, my bones are enfeebled, and my head glows silver with age. Yet, never Lord, have I been unblessed in prayer to You. 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 to be my heir and to be the heir [of the blessings] of the House of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord, acceptable to you." 6 [Thereupon the angels called out unto him: "O Zachariah! We bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son whose name shall be John. [And God says,] "Never have We given this name to anyone before him." 7 "How can I have a son, O Lord" he said, "when my wife is barren and I am old and decrepit?" 8 He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me, even as I created thee before, when thou wast naught. 9 He said: my Lord appoint for me a sign. Allah said: thy sign is that thou shalt not speak unto mankind for three nights, while sound. 10 Then he came forth unto his people from the sanctuary, and signified to them: Glorify your Lord at break of day and fall of night. 11 We commanded John, Zachariah's son, to follow the guidance of the Lord with due steadfastness. We gave knowledge and wisdom to John during his childhood. 12 and a tenderness from Us, and purity; and he was godfearing, 13 And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents). 14 Peace on him the day he was born, and the day he dieth and the day he shall be raised alive! 15
