And mention in the Book, Mary, how she withdrew from her people to an eastern place and she took a veil apart from them; 16 We sent to her Our Spirit (Gabriel) in the resemblance of a perfect human. 17 She said: "Verily! I seek refuge with the Most Beneficent (Allah) from you, if you do fear Allah." 18 He said, “I am indeed one sent by your Lord; so that I may give you a chaste son.” 19 "How can I have a son," she said, "when no man has touched me, nor am I sinful?" 20 He said: "So (it will be): Thy Lord saith, 'that is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us': It is a matter (so) decreed." 21 ۞ So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place. 22 And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She said: "Would that I had died before this, and had been forgotten and out of sight!" 23 But a voice called out to her from below, "Do not despair. Your Lord has provided a brook that runs at your feet, 24 "And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee. 25 So eat and drink and refresh the eye. Then if you see any mortal, say: Surely I have vowed a fast to the Beneficent Allah, so I shall not speak to any man today. 26 Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented. 27 Sister of Aaron, thy father was not a wicked man, nor was thy mother a woman unchaste.' 28 Mary pointed to the child then; but they said, 'How shall we speak to one who is still in the cradle, a little child?' 29 "I am a servant of God," he answered. "He has given me a Book and made me a prophet, 30 And blessed me wherever I may be, and enjoined on me worship and zakat for as long as I live, 31 and likewise to cherish my mother; He has not made me arrogant, unprosperous. 32 Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive! 33 This is Jesus, the son of Mary; and this is the truth about him concerning which they are in doubt. 34 It is not conceivable that God should have taken unto Himself a son: limitless is He in His glory! When He wills a thing to be, He but says unto it "Be" - and it is! 35 (Baby Jesus said), "Worship God who is my Lord as well as yours. This is the straight path". 36 Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day. 37 How keenly would they hear and see when they come before Us then, even though today the evil-doers are lost in palpable error. 38 And warn them of the Day of anguish when the case hath been decided. Now they are in a state of carelessness, and they believe not. 39 Verily We! We shall inherit the earth and whatsoever is thereon: and unto Us they shall be returned. 40
