Also We revealed unto Moses, 'Go with My servants by night; strike for them a dry path in the sea, fearing not overtaking, neither afraid.' 77 And Firon followed them with his armies, so there came upon them of the sea that which came upon them. 78 And Firaun led his people astray, and did not guide them. 79 O Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and we made a covenant with you on the holy mountain's side, and sent down on you the manna and the quails, 80 "Partake of the good things which We have provided for you as sustenance, but do not transgress therein the bounds of equity lest My condemnation fall upon you: for, he upon whom My condemnation falls has indeed thrown himself into utter ruin!" 81 And most surely I am most Forgiving to him who repents and believes and does good, then continues to follow the right direction. 82 ۞ 'Moses, why have you come with such haste from your nation' 83 He said: those! they are close on my footstep, and I hastened to Thee, O my Lord; that Thou mightest be wellpleased. 84 He said: Lo! We have tried thy folk in thine absence, and As-Samiri hath misled them. 85 Thereupon Moses returned to his people full of wrath and sorrow, [and] exclaimed: "O my people! Did not your Sustainer hold out [many] a goodly promise to you? bid, then, [the fulfilment of] this promise seem to you too long in coming? Or are you, perchance, determined to see your Sustainer's condemnation fall upon you, and so you broke your promise to me?" 86 They said: We broke not tryst with thee of our own will, but we were laden with burdens of ornaments of the folk, then cast them (in the fire), for thus As-Samiri proposed. 87 And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot." 88 Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit? 89
