We sent an inspiration to Moses: "Travel by night with My servants, and strike a dry path for them through the sea, without fear of being overtaken (by Pharaoh) and without (any other) fear." 77 The Pharaoh and his army chased Moses and his people but were drowned by the sea. 78 And Firaun led his people astray, and did not guide them. 79 O children of Israel! indeed We delivered you from your enemy, and We made a covenant with you on the blessed side of the mountain, and We sent to you the manna and the quails. 80 'Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you; but exceed not therein, or My anger shall alight on you; and on whomsoever My anger alights, that man is hurled to ruin. 81 Yet I am gracious to him who repents and believes, and does the right, and follows the straight path. 82 ۞ The Lord asked, "Moses, what made you attend your appointment with Me before your people?" 83 He answered: "They are treading in my footsteps while I have hastened unto Thee, O my Sustainer, so that Thou might be well-pleased [with me]." 84 The Lord said, "We tested your people after you left them and the Samiri made them go astray." 85 Moses returned to his people full of wrath and grief, and said: "My people! Has your Lord not made good an excellent promise He made to you? And has a long time passed since those promises were fulfilled? Or was it to incur the wrath of your Lord that you broke your promise with me?" 86 They answered: "We did not break our promise with you out of our own volition; but we were laden with the load of people's ornaments, and we simply threw them down(into the fire), and the Samiri also threw down something, 87 and brought out of there (from the molten gold) the effigy of a calf that lowed." The people cried out: "This is your deity and the deity of Moses, whom Moses has forgotten." 88 What! could they not see that it did not return to them a reply, and (that) it did not control any harm or benefit for them? 89
