We sent an inspiration to Moses: "Travel by night with My servants, and strike a dry path for them through the sea, without fear of being overtaken (by Pharaoh) and without (any other) fear." 77 Then Pharaoh followed them with his hosts and there covered them that which did cover them of the sea. 78 The Pharaoh and his people had gone away from guidance. 79 O ye Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and We made a Covenant with you on the right side of Mount (Sinai), and We sent down to you Manna and quails: 80 saying: "Partake of the good things that We have provided for you, but do not transgress lest My wrath fall upon you; for he upon whom My wrath falls is ruined. 81 But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance. 82 ۞ And what hath made thee hasten from thy people, O Musa? 83 'They are upon my tracks,' Moses said. 'I have hastened, Lord, only that I may please Thee.' 84 He (Allah) said: 'We tempted your nation in your absence, and the Samaritan has misled them into error' 85 Then Musa (Moses) returned to his people in a state of anger and sorrow. He said: "O my people! Did not your Lord promise you a fair promise? Did then the promise seem to you long in coming? Or did you desire that wrath should descend from your Lord on you, so you broke your promise to me (i.e. disbelieving in Allah and worshipping the calf)?" 86 They said: We broke not tryst with thee of our own will, but we were laden with burdens of ornaments of the folk, then cast them (in the fire), for thus As-Samiri proposed. 87 He therefore made a calf for them – a lifeless body, making sounds like a cow – so they said, “This is your God and the God of Moosa; whereas Moosa has forgotten.” 88 Why did they not see that [the thing] could not give them any response, and had no power to harm or to benefit them? 89
