AND, INDEED, [a time came when] We thus inspired Moses: "Go forth with My servants by night, and strike out for them a dry path through the sea; [and] fear not of being overtaken, and dread not [the sea]." 77 Then Pharaoh pursued them with his forces, but the waters completely overwhelmed them and covered them up. 78 Pharaoh led his people astray; he did not guide them aright. 79 Children of Israel! We saved you from your enemy and made a covenant with you on the right side of the Mount and sent down on you manna and quails, 80 "Eat from the wholesome things with which We have provided you but do not transgress, lest you should incur My wrath." [We said], "He that incurs My wrath shall surely be ruined. 81 I am All-forgiving to the righteously striving believers who repent and follow the right guidance. 82 ۞ And (it was said): What hath made thee hasten from thy folk, O Moses? 83 He replied: "Behold, they are close on my footsteps: I hastened to thee, O my Lord, to please thee." 84 (Allah) said: "We have tested thy people in thy absence: the Samiri has led them astray." 85 So Moses returned to his people full of anger and regret. "O my people," he said, "did not your Lord make you a better promise? Did the time of covenant seem too long to you? Or did you wish the wrath of your Lord to fall upon you that you broke the promise you had made to me?" 86 They said: "We broke not the promise to you, of our own will, but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh)] people, then we cast them (into the fire), and that was what As-Samiri suggested." 87 (Then he brought out for them a Calf, a mere body that lowed; and they said, 'This is your god, and the god of Moses, whom he has forgotten.' 88 Why did they not see that [the thing] could not give them any response, and had no power to harm or to benefit them? 89
