And We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]." 77 So Firaun went after them with his army – therefore the sea enveloped them, the way it did. 78 Pharaoh led his people astray; he did not guide them aright. 79 O children of Israel! indeed We delivered you from your enemy, and We made a covenant with you on the blessed side of the mountain, and We sent to you the manna and the quails. 80 [Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen." 81 And verily I am the Most Forgiving unto whomsoever repenteth and believeth and worketh righteously, and thereafter letteth himself remain guided. 82 ۞ What made you hurry away, O Moses, from your people?" 83 He said: "They are close behind me, and I hastened to You, Lord, that You may be pleased with me." 84 He said, “We have therefore tried your people after you came, and Samri has led them astray.” 85 Thereupon Moses returned to his people full of wrath and sorrow, [and] exclaimed: "O my people! Did not your Sustainer hold out [many] a goodly promise to you? bid, then, [the fulfilment of] this promise seem to you too long in coming? Or are you, perchance, determined to see your Sustainer's condemnation fall upon you, and so you broke your promise to me?" 86 They said: we failed not to keep thy appointment of our own authority, but we were laden with burthens of the people's ornaments; then we threw them, and thus the Samiri cast down. 87 Then he produced the image of a calf which mooed like a cow. And they said: 'This is your god and the god of Moses (whom) he has neglected." 88 Why did they not see that [the thing] could not give them any response, and had no power to harm or to benefit them? 89
