And verily We inspired Moses, saying: Take away My slaves by night and strike for them a dry path in the sea, fearing not to be overtaken, neither being afraid (of the sea). 77 Pharaoh pursued them with his hosts, but they were submerged by the sea, which was destined to overwhelm them. 78 The Pharaoh and his people had gone away from guidance. 79 Children of Israel, We saved you from your enemy and promised to settle you on the right side of the peaceful Mount Tur (Sinai) and We sent you manna and quails. 80 [Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen." 81 but to whosoever repents, believes and does good deeds, and is at last guided, I am Forgiving' 82 ۞ [AND GOD SAID:] "Now what has caused thee, O Moses, to leave thy people behind in so great a haste?" 83 He said: "They are right behind me. I have hastened to You, O Lord, so that You may be pleased." 84 He said: verily We have tempted thy people after thee, and the Samiri hath led them astray. 85 With great anger and sorrow, Moses returned to his nation. 'My nation' he said, 'did your Lord not make you a fine promise? Did the time of the covenant seem long to you? Or did you desire that the anger of your Lord should fall upon you so that you failed in your coming to my appointment' 86 They said: "We broke not the promise to thee, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the (whole) people, and we threw them (into the fire), and that was what the Samiri suggested. 87 And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot." 88 What! could they not see that it did not return to them a reply, and (that) it did not control any harm or benefit for them? 89
