Aaron had already, before this said to them: "O my people! ye are being tested in this: for verily your Lord is (Allah) Most Gracious; so follow me and obey my command." 90 They replied, "We shall not cease to worship it until Moses returns to us." 91 (Moses) said: "O Aaron! what kept thee back, when thou sawest them going wrong, 92 so that thou didst not follow after me? Didst thou then disobey my commandment?' 93 'Son of my mother' he replied, 'Do not seize my beard nor my head. I was afraid that you might say: "You have divided the Children of Israel and did not uphold my word." 94 Said [Moses]: "What, then, didst thou have in view, O Samaritan?" 95 He said: I perceived what they perceive not, so I seized a handful from the footsteps of the messenger, and then threw it in. Thus my soul commended to me. 96 Moses said, "Begone! It shall be your lot to say throughout your life, "Do not touch me," and you will be faced with a fate from which there will be no escape. Now look at your deity to which you have become so devoted: we shall burn it up, and then scatter it into the sea. 97 But the god of you all is the One Allah: there is no god but He: all things He comprehends in His knowledge. 98 Thus do We narrate some account to you of what has gone before, and We have truly given you a Reminder of Our own. 99 Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden, 100 As abiders therein. And vile will it be for them on the Day of Judgment as a load! 101 The Day whereon the trumpet will be blown into, and We shall gather the culprits on that Day blear-eyed, 102 Whispering secretly among themselves, “You have not stayed on earth but for ten days.” 103 We know well what they will say when the most upright among them will say: "You did not tarry more than a day." 104
