And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order." 90 They said: we shall by no means cease to be assiduous to it until there returneth to us Musa. 91 Then Moses asked Aaron, "What made you not follow me when you saw them in error? 92 That thou followedst me not? Hast thou then disobeyed my order? 93 Answered [Aaron]: "O my mother's son! Seize me not by my beard, nor by my head! Behold, I was afraid lest [on thy return] thou say, 'Thou hast caused a split among the children of Israel, and hast paid no heed to my bidding!" 94 [Musa (Moses)] said: "And what is the matter with you. O Samiri? (i.e. why did you do so?)" 95 (Samiri) said: "I saw what they saw not, so I took a handful (of dust) from the hoof print of the messenger [Jibrael's (Gabriel) horse] and threw it [into the fire in which were put the ornaments of the Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, or into the calf]. Thus my inner-self suggested to me." 96 Moses said, "Go away! Throughout your life you will not be able to let anyone touch you. This will be your punishment in this life. The time for your final punishment is inevitable. You will never be able to avoid it. Look at your god which you have been worshipping. We will burn it in the fire and scatter its ashes into the sea." 97 Your God is only the One God; there is no god, but He alone who in His knowledge embraces everything.' 98 (O Muhammad), thus do We recount to you the events of the past, and We have bestowed upon you from Ourself an admonition. 99 He who turns away from it will surely bear a heavy burden on the Day of Resurrection, 100 therein abiding forever; how evil upon the Day of Resurrection that burden for them! 101 On the day when the trumpet will be sounded We will raise the criminals from their graves and their eyes will be turned blue and blind. 102 and they shall murmur to one another, "You stayed only ten days on the earth" -- 103 We know well what they will say to one another: We also know that even the most cautious in his estimate will say: "You lived in the world no more than a day." 104
