۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he said to his father and his people, “What are these idols before whom you squat (worshipping)?” 52 They said, 'We found our fathers serving them.' 53 He said: "You and your fathers were in clear error." 54 They said: "Are you speaking in earnest, or only jesting?" 55 He said: Nay! your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who brought them into existence, and I am of those who bear witness to this: 56 I swear by God I will do something to your idols when you have turned your backs and gone." 57 He broke them all into pieces, except for the biggest one of them, so that they might return to it [for enquiry]. 58 'Who has done this to our gods' they exclaimed. 'He must surely be a harmdoer' 59 Some among them said, “We heard a youth speak ill of them – the one called Ibrahim.” 60 "Bring him before the people," they said, "that they may bear witness." 61 They said: Have you done this to our gods, O Ibrahim? 62 He answered: "Rather it was this supreme one who has done it. So ask them, if they can speak." 63 Then they turned to themselves and said: Surely you yourselves are the unjust; 64 Then crestfallen (they confessed): "Truly, as you know, they cannot speak." 65 Abraham said: "Do you, then, worship beside Allah a thing that can neither benefit you nor hurt you? 66 Fie on you and all that ye worship instead of Allah! Have ye then no sense? 67 They said: burn him, and succour your gods, if ye will be doing. 68 We said, “O fire, become cool and peaceful upon Ibrahim.” 69 Then they sought a stratagem against him: but We made them the ones that lost most! 70 We saved him and Lot, and brought them to the land which We had blessed for all the worlds. 71 And We bestowed upon him Ishaque (Isaac), and (a grandson) Ya'qub (Jacob). Each one We made righteous. 72 and appointed them to be leaders guiding by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good deeds, and to perform the prayer, and to pay the alms, and Us they served. 73 And Lot -- to him We gave judgment and knowledge; and we delivered him from the city that had been doing deeds of corruption; they were an evil people, truly ungodly; 74 And We admitted him into Our mercy; indeed he is among those who deserve Our proximity. 75
