۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he asked his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so devoted?" 52 They answered: "We found our forefathers worshipping them." 53 He said: Certainly you have been, (both) you and your fathers, in manifest error. 54 They said: Have you brought to us the truth, or are you one of the triflers? 55 'No' he answered, 'your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Originator of them, and I am among those bearing witness to it. 56 And [he added to himself.] "By God, I shall most certainly bring about the downfall of your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone away!" 57 He broke all the idols into pieces, except the biggest among them so that perhaps people would refer to it. 58 They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers." 59 Some of them said, "We heard a youth called Abraham speaking against the idols". 60 [The others] said: "Then bring him before the peoples eyes, so that they might bear witness [against him]!" 61 (On Abraham's arrival) they said: "Abraham, are you he who has done this to our gods?" 62 He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. 63 Then they turned to one another and said, "It is you yourselves who are in the wrong," 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 He said, “What! You worship, instead of Allah, one that neither benefits you nor harms you?” 66 Woe to you for what you worship instead of God. Have you no understanding?" 67 They said, "Burn him to ashes if you want to help your gods". 68 We said: O fire! be a comfort and peace to Ibrahim; 69 They desired to outwit him; so We made them the worse losers, 70 And We delivered him and Lut to the land wherein We had placed Our blessings for the worlds. 71 We granted him Isaac and Jacob as a gift and helped both of them to become righteous people. 72 And We made them Imams who guided (people) by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good and the keeping up of prayer and the giving of the alms, and Us (alone) did they serve; 73 AND UNTO Lot, too, We vouchsafed sound judgment and knowledge [of right and wrong,] and saved him from that community which was given to deeds of abomination. [We destroyed those people - for,] verily, they were people lost in evil, depraved 74 and We admitted him into Our mercy; he was of the righteous. 75
