۞ Surely We had bestowed wisdom upon Abraham even earlier, and We knew him well. 51 When he said unto his father and his folk: What are these images unto which ye pay devotion? 52 They replied: 'We found our fathers worshipping them' 53 He said: Verily ye and your fathers were in plain error. 54 They said: hast thou come unto us with the truth, or art thou of those who sport? 55 He said: "Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth which He created and to that I bear witness before you. 56 And, by God, I shall assuredly outwit your idols, after you have gone away turning your backs.' 57 He broke all the idols into pieces, except the biggest among them so that perhaps people would refer to it. 58 They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers." 59 'We have heard a young man called Abraham mention them' they replied. 60 They said: 'Then bring him here so that the people may see, so that they may bear witness' 61 'Abraham' they said, 'was it you who did this to our gods' 62 He answered: "Rather it was this supreme one who has done it. So ask them, if they can speak." 63 So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!" 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 (Abraham) said, "Do ye then worship, besides Allah, things that can neither be of any good to you nor do you harm? 66 Shame on you and on whatever you worship instead of God. Can you not understand?" 67 They said: Burn him and help your gods, if you are going to do (anything). 68 Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham." 69 They desired to outwit him; so We made them the worse losers, 70 We took Abraham and Lot safely to the land in which We had sent blessings to the worlds. 71 And We bestowed him Ishaq, and Yaqub the grandson; and We made all of them worthy of Our proximity. 72 And We made them chiefs who guide by Our command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds and the right establishment of worship and the giving of alms, and they were worshippers of Us (alone). 73 AND UNTO Lot, too, We vouchsafed sound judgment and knowledge [of right and wrong,] and saved him from that community which was given to deeds of abomination. [We destroyed those people - for,] verily, they were people lost in evil, depraved 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
