In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ This is a chapter which We have sent down, and which We have ordained; and therein We have sent down revelations manifest, that haply ye may be admonished. 1 The adulteress and adulterer should be flogged a hundred lashes each, and no pity for them should deter you from the law of God, if you believe in God and the Last Day; and the punishment should be witnessed by a body of believers. 2 The fornicator shall marry none but a fornicatress or an idolatress; and the fornicatress none shall marry her but a fornicator or an idolater; that is forbidden to the believers. 3 And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegations),- flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their evidence ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors;- 4 Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. 5 And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful. 6 And yet a fifth, invoking the curse of Allah on him if he is of those who lie. 7 The woman's punishment can be averted if she swears four times by God as testimony that her husband is a liar, 8 And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was of the truthful. 9 (This would not have been possible) if the grace and benevolence of God were not upon you; but God is compassionate and wise. 10
