And recite to them the tiding of Abraham 69 when he asked his father and others, "What do you worship?" 70 They answered: "There are some idols that we worship and are devoted to them with constancy." 71 He said: Do they hear you when you call? 72 or can they benefit or harm you?" 73 They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing so." 74 He said: "Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping,- 75 you and your forefathers -- 76 They are all enemies to me; all, except the Lord of the Universe 77 Who created me and showed me the way, 78 And He Who gives me to eat and gives me to drink: 79 And when I am sick, then He restores me to health 80 He will cause me to die and will bring me back to life. 81 "And who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the day of Judgment. 82 [And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous. 83 Make my words come true in the future. 84 and make me of those who will inherit the Garden of Bliss, 85 And forgive my father. Lo! he is of those who err. 86 Do not betray me 87 the Day when nothing will avail, neither wealth nor offspring, 88 Unless it be he, who shall bring unto Allah a whole heart, 89 For, [on that Day,] paradise will be brought within sight of the God-conscious, 90 and Hell advanced for the perverse. 91 "And it shall be said to them: 'Where are the (gods) ye worshipped- 92 "Instead of Allah? Can they help you or (even) help themselves?" 93 "Then they will be thrown headlong into the (Fire),- they and those straying in Evil, 94 "And the whole hosts of Iblis together. 95 And they will say, when they are quarrelling therein: 96 "By God, we were plainly in error 97 when we made you equal with the Lord of the Worlds. 98 "And none misled us but the guilty." 99 So none we have as intercessors. 100 nor any loving friend. 101 O that we might return again, and be among the believers!' 102 Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 103 And indeed your Lord - only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 104
