(The tribe of) A’ad denied the Noble Messengers. 123 When their fellowman Hud said to them, “Do you not fear?” 124 I am for you an honest Messenger. 125 so fear you God, and obey you me. 126 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 127 What, do you build on every prominence a sign, sporting, 128 "And do ye get for yourselves fine buildings in the hope of living therein (for ever)? 129 When you lay hands upon anyone, you do so as tyrants. 130 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 131 Fear Him who has bestowed on you what you know, 132 He has given you flocks and sons, 133 And gardens and springs. 134 "Verily, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day." 135 They said, 'Alike it is to us, whether thou admonishest, or art not one of the admonishers; 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 and we are not going to be chastised [for adhering to it]!" 138 And they denied him; therefor We destroyed them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 139 Yet surely your Lord is mighty and merciful. 140
