[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 When their brother Hud said unto them: fear ye not? 124 I am for you an honest Messenger. 125 "So fear Allah and obey me. 126 And I do not ask you any reward for it; surely my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 And you make strong fortresses that perhaps you may 129 And will you [always,] whenever you lay hand [on others,] lay hand [on them] cruelly, without any restraint? 130 So fear God, and obey me; 131 “Fear Him Who has aided you with the things you know.” 132 He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons, 133 and gardens, and springs -- 134 "Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Great Day." 135 They said, “It is the same for us, whether you advise us or not be of the preachers.” 136 This is but a fable of the men of old, 137 We will not be subjected to any chastisement." 138 So they belied him, so We destroyed them. Surely, in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
