The 'Ad (people) rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 124 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 And do you take to yourselves underground reservoirs, in order to live for ever! 129 "And when ye exert your strong hand, do ye do it like men of absolute power? 130 So be fearful of God and follow me. 131 Have fear of Him Who has provided you with all the (good) things you know; 132 He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons, 133 “And with gardens and water-springs.” 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They said: "It is the same to us whether you preach or be not of those who preach. 136 "This is no other than a customary device of the ancients, 137 and we shall not be chastised.' 138 So they cried him lies; then We destroyed them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 139 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 140
