(The tribe of) A'ad denied the messengers (of Allah). 123 when their brother Hud said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 124 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 125 So fear God and listen to me. 126 I seek of you no reward for this; my reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 127 Do you build on every height a monument? Vain is it that you do: 128 And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally? 129 “And when you apprehend someone, you seize him mercilessly?” 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 fear Him who has aided you with all that you know -- 132 amply provided you with flocks, and children, 133 And gardens and springs. 134 Surely I fear for you the chastisement of a grievous day 135 They said, "Whether you preach to us or not, 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 “And we will not be punished.” 138 So they rejected him, and We destroyed them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 139 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 140
