The tribe of Ad rejected the Messengers. 123 When their brother Hood said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 "Do you build high palaces on every high place, while you do not live in them? 128 And do you take to yourselves underground reservoirs, in order to live for ever! 129 And when you strike, you strike as tyrants. 130 So be fearful of God and follow me. 131 And fear Him Who hath aided you with that which ye know. 132 "Freely has He bestowed on you cattle and sons,- 133 "And Gardens and Springs. 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day." 135 They replied, "It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach, 136 That is nothing but a habit of the ancients, 137 and we shall never be punished' 138 So they rejected him, and We destroyed them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 139 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 140
