[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 Behold, their brother Hud said to them: "Will ye not fear (Allah)? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 So fear Allah and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 Build ye on every eminence a landmark in vanity? 128 and make for yourselves mighty castles, [hoping] that you might become immortal? 129 When you attack, you attack as tyrants do. 130 So fear God, and obey me; 131 And be careful of (your duty to) Him Who has given you abundance of what you know. 132 Provided you with grazing livestock and children 133 and gardens, and springs -- 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a dreadful Day' 135 They said: "It is the same to us if you warn us or do not warn. 136 This is just a habit of antiquated people. 137 "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!" 138 Eventually they gave the lie to him and We destroyed them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 139 Yet surely your Lord is mighty and merciful. 140
