The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 124 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust: 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 Do you build monuments on every high place in vanity, 128 And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally? 129 And whenever you apply force become tyrannical. 130 Rather keep your duty to Allah, and obey me. 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 He hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 "And gardens and springs. 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They said: it is equal unto us whether thou admonishest or art not of the admonishers. 136 This [religion of ours] is none other than that to which our forebears clung, 137 And we shall not be doomed. 138 So they belied him, so We destroyed them. Surely, in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
