(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
