The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
