The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
