Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
