Thamud denied the messengers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
